An Open Letter to Blackie Lawless...

W.A.S.P. frontman Blackie Lawless decided to weigh on tomorrow's U.S. Presidential election in a lengthy statement on the band's website. I figure that even though I am not an American, I should respond. After all, this election affects everyone, not just citizens of the U.S.

Dear Mr. Lawless;
I have to say it is with a touch of sadness and some confusion that I read your statement regarding Barack Obama and tomorrow's election. While I haven't been a fan of every single release, I still consider myself a fan. More importantly, I always felt that you were a fine example of the non-stereotypical metalhead: intelligent, articulate and well-versed in the world. So I was shocked to see your rant against Obama. You claim that you aren't supporting McCain, yet every single claim you make in the article is straight from the Republicans battle strategy for this election. Lies, bordering on slander, that have been pumped out ad nauseum by Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, The Drudge Report and other right-wing attack artists. Seriously, you believe that Obama is a Marxist? That he is a product of the "Harvard Far-Left"? Perhaps you could explain how that is so much worse than someone who is a product of the "Yale Far Right"? Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it. As one scans down the page, we see all of the pathetic and debunked McCain claims: The connections to Khalidi, Ayers and Wright.
And don't even get me started on ACORN. I am glad to see you denounce racism, yet to make the kind of statements that black people are only voting for Obama because he is black is not only a line of thinking right out of the mouth of such human scum like Rush Limbaugh.
You decry Obama for reading 'Mein Kampf', so I have a question for you: How is this bad, when you take into account the comments of G. Gordon Liddy, convicted felon, domestic terrorist, and good friend of John McCain? It is a sincere disappointment that you would risk more war, economic disaster and even the very freedom to do what you do because you fell for the lies of the complicit right-wing media and a man who voted with Bush 90% of the time. If you think Obama is scary, believe me, what the world fears more is a sickly McCain taking office, then dying to hand the reins of power to Sarah Palin, who will most assuredly attack metal with a ferocity that will make the battle against the PMRC seem like a joke.
So thank you, for making some memorable music over the years. But in your belief of the smear tactics against Obama, and support of a party that will destroy the freedom to play and listen to the music that so many love, you have lost me as a fan. Here's to you not getting what you wish for.

REVIEW- AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE- Total Brutal

AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE- Total Brutal (Metal Blade)

So often metal tends to take itsself way too seriously, so when album this fun comes along, it's a blast. As I Lay Dying's Tim Lambesis is the brains behind this project, which conjours up metal as if it were made by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Implementing some of his more memorable lines from his many action movies as song titles, ADM pushes the Arnold as metalhead theme to levels of rediculousness, drawing many chuckles and a few groans along the way. The tunes are thrashy, a tad generic at times yet full of energy and no doubt they had a ton of fun in the studio creating them. Hard to pick a favorite, though Get to the Choppa, Rubber Baby Buggy Bumpers, and the Terminator inspired I am a Cybernetic Organism, Living Tissue Over (Metal) Endoskeleton are among the catchier tunes. In an era where a cartoon band has the best selling death metal album in Billboard history, it shouldn't be a surprise that ADM has come along. I will say though that Vancouver's Flaming Death Crucifixion Symphony Number 9 not only did the Arnold Metal thing first, they do it better. Still, this is a solid album well worth a few spins.

REVIEW- METALLICA- Death Magnetic

Those of you who know are quite familiar with my stance on Metallica. Being one of those members of the FFAO (First Four Albums Only) club, I was at least curious to see if the album was going to even come close to the hype or be just another pathetic failure like St. Anger. The band's promises have meant nothing to me and many other metal fans for years, so when Rick Rubin was brought on as producer, this was at the very least a sign the band was serious. Could he help the band recapture some of that magic? Well in listening to Death Magnetic, the answer is: sort of. While a return to form as the premiere thrash metal band in the world is out of the question, what Metallica have done is created an album that is all metal, with many nods to their thrash roots and some outright heavy moments. While it may not be worthy of sharing the mantle with the first 4, it is without a doubt the first album that actually sounds like them in nearly 20 years, and at times comes across like a natural progression from ...And Justice For All, like it was the album that should have proceeded it, not the eponymous Black Album. There are some weary moments here, but to hear not only Kirk Hammett ripping solos, and even better James Hetfield playing metal riffs again was heartwarming to say the least. It's become apparent though that Lars simply has declined as a drummer to the point he merely keeps pace now, but often feels like he could be left behind some of the aggressive riffing found here. James' vocals also have that growl again, not as much as say, on Master Of Puppets, but he found the anger for sure. A great album, not entirely good enough to have me bow down as I did in my pimply-faced high school days, but a slight return to form, and a reclaiming of their throne as the world's most popular metal band

We're baaaaaaaaacccccccccccckkkkkkkk

Sort of. While the latest podcast probably won't be ready to go until next week, we are finally ready to step back into the ring. As for why we had such a long absence, well there were a number of factors, personal and otherwise. The metal bug never goes away though, so we will be back not only with the podcasts, but news updates here as well. The BC Metal Forces Myspace page will also be relaunching soon too, and we will have an announcement on the MH Records BCMF Compilation. We ran into some issues trying to get everything going, and it pretty much overwhelmed us, along with the other things that were going on at the time. It looks like we are ready to get that completed soon, so stay tuned for that. 2008 is shaping up to be a great year here in Victoria, as Zimmers Hole and Nightwish are scheduled to make stops here in the spring.
THE CAVALERA CONSPIRACY is out on March 25th, and marks the first collaboration between Max and Igor since the former's deparpture from SEPULTURA. And how do you create a buzz for your new album? How about bashing one of your labelmates? In an interview with Sweden's Close Up Magazine (as seen on blabbermouth.net) Max let loose on Killswitch Engage "I went to see LAMB OF GOD in that States and they were alright, but KILLSWITCH ENGAGE opened and it was the gayest show I've ever seen," says Max Cavalera. "I was like, I'm not part of this scene, it's fucking gay.' They were acting like they were U2 and I was like, 'Hmm….' The attitude was so ridiculous. I don't know these guys, they're on my label [Roadrunner] and all, but it was completely disappointing and gay. Like really lame, such a lame band live, everything about the whole attitude. LAMB OF GOD came out and destroyed them and I don't even like LAMB OF GOD that much, but they were so much better coming after KILLSWITCH ENGAGE. I was like, 'If that's what the scene is about, hey fuck it, it ain't got nothing to do with me." Check out 2 tracks from "Inflikted" Sanctuary and Inflikted. SLAYER won the Grammy for Best Metal Performance Sunday night, for a bonus track on a re-release of their Christ Illusion album, we here at MH Metal Radio were hoping King Diamond or Machine Head, but hey, what do we know? Make sure to check back for more updates, and watch for Episode 18 coming next week.

Episode 16

Episode 16

Sick and Sweet 16, it's the latest edition of Mass Hypnosis Metal Radio. This week, we give you some classic old school from SACRIFICE and FLOTSAM & JETSAM, a couple great bands from South America (CHAINSAW KILLER and FUNEBRIA) and Europe (DEATH BY DAWN and PUTREFIED) killer tracks from SODOM, ENTOMBED, MORIBOND, ENFORCER and SELF REGIME and an interview with Vancouver's ENTROPIA!

CHAINSAW KILLER- Spark Of CreationColumbia's Chainsaw Killer have that early 80's Euro-thrash vibe that seems to breed like crazy in the jungles of South America.http://www.myspace.com/chainsawkiller666
DEATH BY DAWN- Not Afraid To DieThese German thrashers feature ex-Pestilence/Bolt Thrower vocalist Martin Van Drunen. Very straight up death-thrash for those who like their thrash traditional and without all the metalcore trappings.http://www.myspace.com/deathbydawnde

ENTROPIA- One By OneAnother up and coming Vancouver band with a great old school vibe, part of a new wave of metal talent coming from a city ready to unleash a tsunami of metal insanity on the world. The interview was done with MH Metal Radio's Chunky McFunbags at The Buffalo Club's Metal Mondays.http://www.myspace.com/entropiametal

FLOTSAM AND JETSAM- Iron TearsThe band recently re-released it's classic 1986 debut 'Doomsday For The Deciever', that introduced the metal world to a young Jason Newsted, who would...well you know all about that. A killer album by a bunch of crazy Arizona thrashers that is a must in any decent metal collection.http://www.myspace.com/fandj
ENFORCER- Evil Attacker Sweden certainly isn't lacking for bands who keep the spirit of 80's metal alive. Enforcer remind one a lot of 'Violence and Force' era EXCITER, which is something we here at MH will always support! Love these guys!http://www.myspace.com/enforcerswe
ENTOMBED- ForsakenAlong with bands like Dismember, Unleashed and Grave, Entombed made their mark on the metal scene with a sound that just fucking crushed you upon first listen. This one goes back a bit, as they began their transition to a more groove-based death sound, but still with that wicked gallop that's instantly recognizeable.http://www.myspace.com/serpentsaints

FUNEBRIA- TormentoBack to South America, this time it's Venezuelan Black Metallers Funebria. The track is from their debut album 'IN DOMINUS BLASFEMICAL EST… AD NOCTUM SATHANIA'.http://www.myspace.com/funebriaband
MORIBOND- Dim LightNow this is weird, a death metal band from Quebec! Okay all kidding aside, Moribond is a fairly new band who unlike a lot of their provincial counterparts focus on the heaviness rather than the technicality. Their debut is called 'Funeral', and is a promising entry into the Canadian metal scene.http://www.myspace.com/moribond01

SACRIFICE- Soldiers Of MisfortuneWhile we patiently await the Canadian thrash legends' triumphant return later this year, here is the classic title track from their third album.http://www.myspace.com/sacrificecanada
SODOM- City Of GodFrom their most recent, s/t release, the legendary German thrashers show no sign of slowing down or lightening up. A great track from one of the best albums of 2006.http://www.myspace.com/sodomisthy
SELF REGIME- InfectedThis week's BC Metal Forces Band of the Week is a great death/thrash act from East Vancouver, with vocals from (and yes, stu... 3 bands officially makes you a bandwhore :>) Into Eternity/ Omega Crom screamer Stu Block. But don't let those names fool you, these guys sound nothing like either two. Death-thrash will some nice black metal flourishes that will leave an impact on you.http://www.myspace.com/selfregime

MH Metal Radio Episode 15

episode 15

Greg Millen on Ryan Smyth's stick: "That knob looks familiar."

Episode 15 of Mass Hypnosis Metal Radio is here. This week
Mass Hypnosis Metal Radio's Chunky McFunbags sits down
with Vancouver upstarts MASTIC, as well as a double shot of
METAL CHURCH, new songs from WITH PASSION and
CHAOSFEAR, and some great tracks from AGENT STEEL,
EXCITER, GRAVEYARD BBQ, INCITER, ABORTED, and
ANATOLIAN WISDOM
!

METAL CHURCH- In The Blood
METAL CHURCH- A Light In The Dark- A double shot of the
band that hits Vancouver and Victoria this month, the first from
their amazing s/t debut, the other the title track from their most
recent release.

INCITER- All I Had If you can get past the downright scary
similarity to the vocals with a certain Mr. Hetfield, this song kicks
a fair amount of kiester...

MASTIC- Primetime While these guys work on a new album,
here's a track from their 1st demo. Our roving reporter Chunky
McFunbags had a chat with them at the Buffalo Club in
Vancouver.

AGENT STEEL- Agents Of Steel Ah, yes... remember when it
was called Speed Metal? Agent Steel take us back to the 80's,
just close your eyes and you can see yourself in the front row,
banging like there's no tomorrow!

EXCITER- Saxons Of The Fire From 'Violence and Force' this
seminal Canadian thrash act inspired countless acts around the
world (Annihilator springing to mind right away). Gotta love the
cheesy horror movie album cover too!

GRAVEYARD BBQ- Cheat On The Church Anyone who's
become addicted to the PS2 game Guitar Hero knows this song.
They won a contest to have it included on the first version. This
one goes out to MetalMatt.

WITH PASSION- Tales Of Sirens Earache has big hopes for this
California based act, this is from the new disc 'What We See
When We Close Our Eyes'

CHAOSFEAR- Hard Time For The Wrong Man Brazillian 3 piece
thrash act that rips it up hard and fast, from their new disc 'One
Step Behind Anger'. One of the best bands this country has to
offer (and that's saying something!)

ABORTED- The Saw And The Carnage Done While we anxiously
await their new one, here's a killer cut (groan!!) from
Goremageddon.

ANATOLIAN WISDOM- Elegy To The Gilgamesh Vancouver's
Black Metal tyrants bring their fury to Victoria on the 17th, here's
something to whet your appetite until then

http://www.myspace.com/dreamakerhome

REBECCA'S GRAVE- Run From Below New Brunswick's Rebecca's Grave got their name from a legend in the Moncton area about an 1800's witch who killed and sacrificed farm animals. When she was caught and killed, she was buried upside down. If she came back to life, she'd dig her way to hell, and they added three slabs of concrete over the burial ground. It is said that a "ghost cat" is sometimes seen prowling around her grave, waiting for her return.http://www.myspace.com/rebeccasgrave

BANE AND ILLUSION- Apprentice Of Legend One of the most frustrating things in this business is stumbling across new bands, only to discover they've disbanded. Originally from Kelowna, BC (and now hailing from Vantaa, Finland) this 1 man black metal act is stunning in it's cold, atmospheric approach to black metal. Not to fear, Erik has a new project, Bladesmith, that is just fucking EVIL!http://www.myspace.com/baneandillusion

RADICAL- La Solucion If you've been listening to our weekly shows, you know how much we love old-school death and thrash. Radical come to us from Uruguay, and are so fucking 80's you'll find yourself banging your head right into your monitor (be careful when you do this, it can be painful and costly!).http://radicalcore.com/

Heavy metal warning! Podcast 6 is up - the all BC bands cast ( thanks to BC metal forces )

CRADLE TO GRAVE- Projectile
myspace link A new band out of Victoria, they add another lethal weapon to a city that is loaded with technical death metal acts.

MASQUERADE OF SILENCE- Plague Of Undeath
myspace link A new act from Vancouver with a myriad of influences, one we will be keeping an eye on in the future.

MITOCHONDRION- Through Cosmic Gaze
myspace link
A treat for you all, a live track recorded recently at the Cobalt in Vancouver.

SILENT STRAIN- All Hell
myspace link
A band you may not have heard of, but with vocals from Annihilator's Dave Padden and Soulscar's Igor Chiefot on drums, you will soon be very familiar with them...

TYRANTS BLOOD- Wolfheart
myspace link
How about a Vancouver Black Metal Supergroup to finish it off? With all due respect, having members of Omega Crom, Volatile and Blasphemy joining forces, you get some serious respect and reverence for old school mayhem. I am seriously awed by this...

Hallow's Eve- Sheer Heart Attack
From Monument, a fun track that many haven't heard, makes Metallica's Stone Cold Crazy look sophmorish...

Powermad- Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment
Here today gone tomorrow thrashers (though I hear they are re-uniting) from the Gabba Gabba Metal album

Sinergy- Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)
From A Metal tribute to Abba, Alexi Laiho's other band, a bright light on an otherwise clunker of an album

John Wiles Booth- I Can Feel Your Heartbeat
A Partridge Family cover. I shit you not.

Metal Church- Highway Star
From the s/t debut, the Deep Purple classic with the soaring vocals of the late David Wayne

Six Feet Under- Holocaust
From Graveyard Classics, an underrated collection of covers from Mr. barnes and company, though GC 2 was embarassing (re-recording the entire Back In Black album???)
